Feeling like you need to break out of the city and see some nature with this great spring weather? There are so many options. This week I want to suggest Sugarloaf Mountain in Frederick County, MD.
Where: Sugarloaf Mountain in Urbana (Frederick County), MD
Get there: ~1-hour drive from DC
Do: Hike the mountain! And relax at the Soleado Lavender Farm if visiting during the summer
Eat/drink: Stop by Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard for a glass of wine (or two)
At only an hour drive from the city, Sugarloaf is a nice and easy DC day trip. We actually went in the fall (hence the coats) but this small mountain offers nice hikes in any season.
Sugarloaf offers hikes for people with all abilities. There are definitely a few very steep parts of the trails (you are climbing a mountain, after all) but you can easily choose the length of your hike based on which parking lot you choose. We also saw a many families with kids and dogs here. Here's trail map to plan your excursion and some pictures from our fall hike.
After the hike, it’s time to reward yourself for exercising (or is that just me?). Anyway, at the foot of Sugarloaf Mountain is Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard. They have indoor and outdoor seating with great views. And live music with food trucks starting in May and going through the summer.
One other place to check out nearby is Soleado Lavender Farm. For $5 you can relax at this working farm and bring a picnic (although not your dog, sorry!). During June and July, you can pick your own lavender to bring home. And they have events like plant workshops and group yoga classes. Ahh, I'm starting to relax now just thinking about it!
